People Analytics: A Journey to Power BI Agility and Beyond

HR analytics, also referred to as people analytics, workforce analytics, or talent analytics, is the process of gathering, analyzing, and reporting HR data. HR analytics is, to put it briefly, the storytelling of people data.

It gives HR professionals the ability to choose actions based on data to attract, engage, and retain employees, which increases Return on Investment –(ROI). It will help companies evaluate the effects of a variety of HR measures on overall business performance. This will help companies to base decisions on data rather than instinct, which frequently leads to poor choices.

The key metrics are absence rate, overtime expense, training efficiency, employee wellness, voluntary rate, involuntary rate, talent turnover rate and many more.

With the help of the Power BI platform, which is a business intelligence-focused interactive data visualization software solution created by Microsoft, all these tasks are simple to complete. It is a component of the Microsoft Power Platform and may be quickly integrated with your existing HRMS system. This will provide a single source of truth for all your HR data. Additionally, it is completely configurable and will update data at any interval that you choose in the setup settings.

I would like to share my Power BI experience and how, for one of my projects, I created an agile dashboard for my organization. This dashboard quantifies the employee journey and improves employee productivity.

First of all, I had trouble every time I tried to analyze HR data. This is because my HR employees and I had to take the raw data out of the system and then build on it to discover any meanings. Only then did I decide to create a real-time dashboard that is directly aligned with HR strategy and further aligned with company strategy in order to tackle the problem. For me, the most compelling benefit is the ability to cover all points in the employee lifecycle with accurate metrics.

We understand our employee experiences better and they feel more heard. Here are those actions taken as part of the smooth implementation of Agile People Analytics certainly in partnership with HRIS:

  • Define the problems you want to solve

  • Align our agile people analytics to business goals and outcomes

  • Build a report from one source – HRIS

  • Automate the extraction of the report using Power Automate

  • Use One-drive to store the extracted data

  • Connect Power BI to data placed at One-Drive

  • Build Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) in Power BI for all HR KPIs and metrics.

  • Build Data Visualization to communicate to HR & business leaders.

  • Continuous monitoring, governance and innovation are key to success.

I enjoy turning data into insights and think a data-driven approach can help us tackle complicated problems, and tools like this can assist HR and business leaders in making the best decisions at the right time.
